Declaring a Psychology major◊

  • Meet with a psychology advisor (Tobin 501) during our regularly scheduled weekly times for major admissions (see times below).
  • Beginning October 1, 2009, students wishing to become Psychology majors must be currently registered in a course that fulfills the R1 general education requirement or have completed their R1 general education requirement BEFORE they can sign into the major.◊  The R1 can be fulfilled by taking an appropriate course(s) or passing the R1 exemption test.†
  • Please bring a copy of your transcript and your academic requirements report (ARR) that shows that the R1 requirement is in progress or is completed to sign into the major.
  • Please highlight all psychology courses on your transcript.
  • When you meet with an advisor, you will complete the change of major form. You will then need to be signed out of your old major. Return the appropriate copies of the change of major to your old department, the psych department, and to the registrar (Whitmore 213).  If you are signing out of "undeclared," when you sign out, your change of major will be delivered to the registrar's office for you.

Although fulfillment of the R1 gen ed requirement will allow joining the major, beginning spring of 2014, completion of Math 101 AND 102 or higher will be a pre-requisite for enrolling in Psych 240 (Math 102 may be in progress at the time of registration).  Transfer credit from equivalent college or advanced placement courses will also meet this requirement.  Fulfilling lower-level math courses or passing the R1 exemption test will no longer qualify students to take psych 240.  Details are available at the psych advising office in Tobin 501.

To learn more about the R1 exemption test and dates when it is offered see: http://www.math.umass.edu/Undergrad/r1_exempt.htm

To join the psychology major, please see hours below that will be posted when the Fall 2013 term begins.  We will not be signing students into the major during the summer.

If you would like to join the neuroscience track, then you must sign in with one of the neuroscience advisors (and you must have a 3.0 GPA).  You can see the neuroscience advisor hours here.
